Austin, part owner in a sawmill here in 1839, built a boat dock for himself. When he expanded it for the use of others, he put a street light on a pole for a lighthouse and it became known as Austin's Dock, later as Austin Port, and finally known as Port Austin. Today, Port Austin has many resorts and motels for people vacationing. There are several parks in the area and numerous recreational activities.
