Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge

This refuge was established in 1953 and contains 9,293 acres. This area is one of the largest and most productive wetland ecosystems in Michigan and contains large populations of migratory birds as a stopping point.

75 percent of the refuge is wetland and bottomland hardwood habitat, the remaining portion is cropland and moist soils units.

The refuge has about 70,000 visitors a year.
