Three Rivers

Three Rivers is located in St. Joseph County south of Kalamazoo between Coldwater and Benton Harbor along Highway 86 on the banks of the St Joseph River near the Indiana state line.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 7,229, a decrease of 235 since 1990.

This community started in the early 1830s and acquired the name of Three Rivers in 1840 after a few previous unsuccessful attempts at other names, including St. Joseph, Moab and Lockport. It was named "Three Rivers" by then landowner, John H. Bowman, because of the confluence of the St. Joseph, Portage and Rocky Rivers at that point. In 1895, it was incorporated into a city.

Today, Three Rivers includes a good portion of auto-related manufacturing. A popular site to visit is the Silliman House on the St. Joseph River, established in 1876 and currently a Museum operated by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
