Watervliet is located in Berrien County off of I-94 south of Paw Paw Lake. Watervliet is part of the Benton Harbor, Michigan metro area. Watervliet was founded in 1833 when the Sumner-Wheeler saw mill was erected on the current site of the Watervliet Paper Company. One of the first merchants to the area was Isaac Moffatt, who opened a store in 1836. The town was named for the Dutch term meaning "flowing water". Today, Watervliet is a lot of recreation to enjoy. Paw Paw Lake is a favorite among boaters and fishermen and Lake Michigan is only a short distance away. Golfers will enjoy the Paw Paw Lake Golf Course and there is cross country skiing at Brookside Park, just south of Watervliet.
