Belle Plaine is located in Scott County southwest of Minneapolis between Shakopee and St Peter on US 169 on the banks of the Minnesota river near Le Sueur.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 3,219, an increase of 70 since 1990.

Belle Plaine is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area in the West Central Lakes Region Region.
