Big Lake lies on the shores of both Big Lake and Mitchell Lake, and is at the southern entry point for the Sherburne County National Wildlife Refuge and the Sand Dunes State Forest. The City is located in Sherburne County, midway between Minneapolis and St Cloud, at the intersection of US 10 and Hwy 25 in the West Central Lakes Region Region. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,472, an increase of 1,359 since 1990.
