The doors to the winery were officially opened in July of 1999. There are over 200 acres on the property, 38 of which are grapes, making Carlos Creek Winery the largest vineyard in Minnesota and the five surrounding states. There are 500 grape vines added to the vineyard each year. The Riesling plantings provide their best selling white wine and the best selling red is their award winning Merlot. Carlos Creek Winery is also home to one of the largest plantings of "Frontenac" grapes in the United States. This grape varietal was developed in by the University of Minnesota. It is a cross between a Cabernet and Merlot and in a few years should be getting more recognition as west coast vineyards are now starting to grow them.
