In the
Superior North Shore Region and
Cook County, the community of Grand Portage is within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation, occupying the very northeast corner of Minnesota on the border with Canada. It is reached by Hwy 61 north of
Duluth.
Early Chippewa (still there) used the 'grand portage' to link winter camps to lodgings on Lake Superior, and early fur traders followed suit to make Grand Portage a bustling trade center for most of the 1700s.
