Fosston?s privately-owned hospital was established in 1897 by Dr. C. J. Rosser and his family. The Rosser family was interested in the health and welfare of the area lumbermen. In the years to follow, hospital ownership changed hands involving many different physicians.

On May 7, 1947, the Fosston Hospital Association was officially incorporated. A few years later the Fosston Hospital Association realized that a new hospital was necessary to better serve the community. Construction of the new hospital began in April of 1960. On September 11, 1961 the first patients were admitted to the new building.

In April, 1993, the Association was officially renamed First Care Medical Services. First Care Medical Services is a community-based, non-profit healthcare system which is under the direct supervision of its corporate members.
