Pipestone National Monument

Within the tract of the 283-acre Pipestone National Monument are the pipestone quarries where the red stone used by American Indians to make ceremonial pipes is found. The visitor center contains an audiovisual room and a museum that portrays the history of the Indian pipes. During the summer American Indian craftsmen can be seen working with the stone. The Circle Trail leads visitors to the quarries, stone profiles, geologic phenomena , Winnewissa Falls, Lake Hiawatha and Leaping Rock. The Upper Midwest Indian Cultural Center adjoins the visitor center. Monument open daily 8am-5pm; closed New Year's Day and Christmas Day.
