Wheaton is the seat of
Traverse County, in the
West Central Lakes Region. Lake Traverse and two wild game farms offer wildlife viewing, including ducks and geese, trumpeter swans, pelicans, deer, raccoons and pheasant.
It lies where US 75 meets Hwy 27, just east of the South Dakota line and Mud Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,581, a decrease of 34 since 1990.
