Clayton is located in St. Louis County, of which it is the county seat, just west of St Louis along Interstate 270 between the Missouri River and Mississippi Rivers and just west of the Illinois state line. Clayton is part of the St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois metro area.
It was named after Ralph Clayton, a farmer who donated land for the county seat.
