In addition to chronicling the history of the Heaton Undertaking Ware Rooms from its beginning in 1842 to its present-day identity as Heaton-Bowman-Smith, the museum presents a historical perspective on the funeral industry in general. Of special interest is the wicker body basket that was used in the transport of Jesse James' body. The funeral home is also the oldest business in continuous operation in the city of
