Established in 1935 to commemorate the westward of the expansion of the United States during the nineteenth century, the park's nearly 91 acres covers the site of the original
St Louis settlement.
Gateway Arch, a Memorial Drive and Market Street, soars 630 feet above the site of Pierre de Laclede's house and trading post. It commemorates the gateway to the west used by thousands of pioneers. It stands 75 feet higher than the Washington Monument.
