Vernon County, of which it is the county seat, 64 miles N of
Joplin between Deerfield and Dederick along Highway 71 near Osage Village State Historic Site and the Little Osage River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 8,173, a decrease of 424 since 1990.It was named for Nevada City, CA.
