Laplata Public Library, serving an area of 1,470 residents, has a collection of 16,800 books and periodicals; in addition, there are 72 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials, as well as 460 video items, such as DVDs and VHS tapes. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public. Staffing consists of one employee, including one fully accredited librarian, plus volunteers. Annual expenditures on the library collection total $3,300. Patrons make 8,800 visits annually, and check out materials 8,800 times. Thirty percent of all check-outs are children's materials.

Great River Days Muscatine IA July24-27 The festival features a carnival, kids activities and attractions, as well as queen, talent and other contests. Four nights of live music will be held in the entertainment area of the park. Oskaloosa Sweet Corn Serenade Oskaloosa IA August1 This family festival features good food, numerous children's activities sponsored by area civic organizations, a wide variety of musical entertainers and a large craft show. Delicious sweet corn fresh cooked for only 25ยข, Pork burgers, pie and ice cream are available for a small charge. This event also features pedal tractor pull, a pie baking contest, and a corn shucking contest just to name a few. This event alone typically brings over 5,000 patrons to downtown Oskaloosa.
