The Springfield Art Museum is a City agency with a rich heritage of supporting the arts in the Ozarks. The Museum is the permanent home for some 6,500 art objects representing thousands of years of culture. Special collections include contemporary American watercolor and the work of artists native to the Ozarks. Incorporated in 1928, a 394-seat auditorium was completed in 1974, and extensive renovation of the museum was completed in 1984. In 1994 the museum finished 13,800 square foot Jeannette L. Musegrave Wing to kepp all the museums permanet displays. Home to Watercolor U.S.A., nationally recognized annual competitive exhibition since 1962; Prints USA, a biennial national competitive exhibition; and MOAK, a four-state biennial all-media competitive exhibition. All museum events are free and open to the public, with the exception of art classes for which tuition is required. The musuem is closed Monday.
