The mansion was built in 1879 by William M. Wyeth whose fortune was made in wholesale hardware and saddle manufacturing. The mansion was designed in the Gothic style by Eckel and Mann Architects. They incorporated ideas gathered by the Wyeths on a European tour. The walnut woodwork in the main hall and the beautiful stained glass windows on the stair landings are especially outstanding. The Wyeth family lived in the house until 1887 when it was purchased by Mrs. Kate Tootle. Members of the Tootle family lived in the house until 1946. Recently, the staff of the St. Joseph Museum has restored a bedroom, the Main Hall, and the room housing the Museum Store to their former Victorian elegance.
