Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site

The original 3,600 acres included an elegant home, fruit-drying shed, smokehouse, brick kiln, sawmill, gristmill, three-story mill and acres of orchards and croplands. Nearby stood a brick schoolhouse and church, both of which Watkins helped build. Many of these original buildings have been restored, with livestock and plants re-introduced to create an 1870 living history farm. Come by the visitor center for an introduction to the Watkins family and their many business ventures. Tour the Greek revival-style house and marvel at its original furnishings and sweeping, semi-circular staircase. Stroll among the period gardens and orchards. Visit Watkins Woolen Mill, the site's namesake. The mill and machinery are both in an excellent state of preservation, and the mill is the only 19th century textile mill in the country with its original machinery still intact. Come and experience this living example of 19th century industry mingled with the country charm of a prosperous family farm.
