The Whitmer Inn was built in 1868 on the Old Mormon Trail near where the Mormons entered Caldwell County over the Crooked River. This Inn is established in commemoration of John Whitmer, who felt the burning need to return to Far West, a site sacred to his heart. The original Whitmer Inn was built in 1837, just south of the Far West Temple lot in Far West, Missouri.
