Stretching 150 miles from Fort Walton Beach, Florida to Gulfport, Mississippi, the Gulf Islands National Seashore covers 135,000 acres. The Mississippi section comprises three barrier islands, Ship, Horn and Petit Bois, which extend from Gulfport to Pascagoula, as well as the Davis Bayou Area on the mainland near Ocean Springs. Main visitor attractions include the area's pristine white sand beaches and sparkling blue waters, as well as the prehistoric remnants of shell mounds and fortifications dating from the early 19th-century. An abundance of recreation adds to the historic interest of the area, which includes camping and picnicking. The park is open year-round, although specific hours vary seasonally and by unit.
