The wilderness is administered by the Gallatin National Forest, Custer National Forest, and Shoshone National Forest of Idaho. Almost a million acres in extent, it contains two distinct mountain ranges. The Absarokas feature rugged peaks and forested valleys. The Beartooth Mountains are characterized by granite plateaus and alpine meadows.
