The Ashland Ranger District is in the
Custer National Forest in south central Montana. It is the largest contiguous block of Federal ownership in eastern Montana. Within the district is the largest grazing program of any USFS ranger district in the nation. The area is rich in wildlife and coal and is very popular with trophy deer hunters and turkey hunters. The topography varies from rolling grasslands to steep rock outcrops. Vegetation varies from prairie to dense stands of ponderosa pine.
The district has developed a two-loop ski touring trail in the Camps Pass area. There are three riding and hiking aras in the District as well.
The Ashland District Office is on the south side of Hwy 212 in Ashland, directly across from the Ashland elementary school.
