Located between
Kalispell and
Polson, this is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Renowned for its fishing, there are also boat tours from various locations.
The lake is the remnant of Lake Missoula, which emptied itself in a long series of catastrophic outflows that created Washington's Grand Coulee and other natural features.
