Lewis and Clark Expedition

The area now occupied by the state of Montana was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. President Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition to explore the territory from St Louis, MO, to the mouth of the [columrvr].

The expedition passed through Montana twice, once west in 1804-1805 and again on the return trip in 1806. They recorded descriptions of the land as they passed through it and named many important points of interest.

Visit Online Highways' interactive American History project. A team of researchers is developing a site that will present U.S. history in the context of present day travel.
