The Martin Barrett Hospital opened in 1923; the result of generous bequeaths by community members Martin Barrett, Joseph Shineberger, and Margaret Roe. The original hospital was a three-story brick building with 12 single patient rooms and four wards. Staff dormitory rooms were on the third floor.
In 1971, a new hospital was built and the Martin Barrett Hospital closed. In 1975 the hospital contracted with Brim Healthcare, Inc. for management services, beginning a long-term relationship.
In 1992 the hospital was remodeled and expanded to accommodate growth in outpatient services. The hospital is licensed for 31 beds, and operates at 21 beds and 10 swing beds.
In June 1998, Barrett Hospital & Healthcare hosted a community open house celebrating "75 Years of Quality Healthcare Close to Home."
Over the years,Barrett Hospital & Healthcare has continued to strategically expand services and respond to advances in medical technology.
