The Sylvanite sprang up beside the Yaak River, only six miles from the Idaho border. At the time, no one was sure whether it was in Idaho or Montana. It reached its peak in 1897-1898. Population was estimated to be 1000, with three hotels, two restaurants, six saloons with dance halls and girls, a post office, three general stores, one meat market, one brewery, one drugstore, and a sawmill.
In late August, 1910, most of the town was destroyed by a forest fire.
Sylvanite is located in NW Montana, about 115 miles northwest of Kalispell.
