Yogo Gulch |
In 1879, a rumor spread telling of the discovery of gold in Yogo Creek. Hundreds of men flocked to the site but little gold was actually produced so the men left. By the early 1890's, only a dozen people remained. At that time, a couple of prospectors turned up some pretty blue stones which they gave to a school teacher friend. The stones turned out to be sapphires. Yogo Gulch is the now the site of one important sapphire mines in the world.
Yogo Gulch is located in the central area of Montana, southeast of Great Falls, near Windam, toward Utica on Highway 87.
