Search Acapulco

Its original construction dates from between the years 1615 to 1617 and its principal function was to repel the constant attacks by pirates, corsairs and filibusters that prowled the seas during that era. A very strong earthquake destroyed the Fort but it was rebuilt between the years 1778 and 1783. Built of stone and in a pentagonal shape. Today it's a newly renovated museum with 12 exhibitions halls filled with unique relics. The Historical Museum of Acapulco is located in the interior of the Fort of San Diego. With large exhibition rooms, an auditorium, bookstore and coffee shop, the Fort sits on a hill above the harbor, and is an attraction in itself. The museum is managed by the National Institute of Anthropology and History and it features educational exhibits about the history of Mexico prior to its independence in 1821. Among its exhibits there is a wonderful collection of artifacts that were traded between the Spaniards and Asia.
