Mexico City was founded in 1325 as Tenochtitlan. It was the capital of the Aztec Empire until the Spanish arrived in 1521. After the Conquest, the new city was begun in 1524 on the ruins of Tenochca buildings. Today, Mexico City is the most populous city in the world and one of the most cosmopolitan.
