Jefferson is located in Ashe County (of which it is the county seat) north of Wilkesboro between Creston and Laurel Springs along Highway 88 near Glendale Springs, West Jefferson, Crumpler, Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, and the New River State Park. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,349, an increase of 49 since 1990.
