Mount Holly is located in Gaston County between Charlotte and Lincolnton along Hwy 27 on the banks of the Catawba River near Belmont, Gastonia, Lake Norman, and Dallas. Each year during the first weekend in May, the city closes Main Street to hold it's annual Spring Festival. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 7,813, an increase of 103 since 1990.

Mount Holly is part of the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill metro area.
