North Carolina Transportation Museum

The museum traces the history of transportation in North Carolina. The complex, once Southern Railway's primary staging and repair facility, includes the massive Back Shop, the 37-bay Roundhouse and nine other buildings. Among the displays are Conestoga wagons, antique automobiles, steam locomotives, bicycles and a dugout canoe. Separate 30-minute rail tours in restored coaches are available; departures require a minimum of 10 people. Museum and grounds open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, April-October; Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 1-4pm, the rest of the year. Closed holidays; museum free.
