Wing Haven has been a special part of Charlotte since its creation by Elizabeth and Edwin Clarkson in 1927. Three acres of lovely vistas, formal gardens and controlled wilderness are open to all who wander its paths. A bird sanctuary and a botanist’s delight, it gives pleasure and inspiration to all who visit.
The gardens were given to Wing Haven Foundation Inc. by the Clarksons in 1970 and now its Board of Directors is responsible for the perpetuation and preservation of this lovely spot. The Clarksons remained in the home until late 1988.
In September 1989 Wing Haven was devastated by Hurricane Hugo. Over 75 trees were lost, obviously causing widespread damage to nesting areas, brick walls and natural buffers. Since that time a great deal of restoration has taken place.
