At 6,285 feet, Roan Mountain is not the highest N.C. mountain, but Dr. Elisha Mitchell, for whom Mount Mitchell was named, called it "the most beautiful of all high mountains."
While Roan is known for its spring rhododendrons, it is a year-round mountain. There's beautiful scenery in all seasons, plus hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, fishing, and tennis. The recreation area provides badminton, softball, basketball, and a game room. And there's hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Tennessee's Roan Mountain State Park is the only state park in the South offering cross-country skiing. While many skiers use the open fields, there are three trails totaling 8.5 miles used for skiing.
The Doe River runs through the park and is stocked with rainbow, brown and brook trout.
