Troy is located in Montgomery County (of which it is the county seat), south of Greensboro within the Uwharrie National Forest, between Albemarle and and [carthage] at the junction of Highways 24/27, 109, and 134 near [biscoe], [star], [mountgil], and the Little River. The town is named for John B. Troy, a popular attorney and solicitor of the judicial district. Legend has it that the streets of Troy are paved with solid gold. When the streets were being paved, fill dirt was brought in from the gold mines in Eldorado, a once thriving mining community northwest of town.
