Lakota, founded in 1883, is located in eastern North Dakota in Nelson County (of which it is the county seat) along U.S. Highway 2 about 60 miles west of Grand Forks.

The town's location just 25 miles east of Devils Lake and 10 miles north of sizeable Stump Lake gives residents several nearby recreational venues. Hunting and fishing are both popular sports around Lakota. Ducks and geese, deer and moose, as well as other animals are abundant.

The Lakota Rock Creek Golf Course offers golfers a chance to enjoy an updated 9-hole facility with grass greens. The airport makes it convenient for out-of-towners who just call the club house for a ride to the course.
