Big Springs

Big Springs is located in Deuel County. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 450, a decrease of 45 since 1990.

The town was named after a spring that provided early Indian tribes with fresh water. In time, the stream became a water source for steam engines of the Union Pacific rail line.

Big Springs has two parks, a modern swimming pool and a nine-hole sand-greens golf course. Facilities at the city park include a sheltered picnic area with tables, playground equipment, two hard-surfaced basketball and tennis courts with fencing, and two sand volleyball courts. The historic Union Pacific depot is next door. Moved from its original site, the depot has been converted into a museum where travelers can look into the past and relive the exciting days of early Big Springs.

The Ash Hollow State Historic Park is near by.
