Located four miles NE of
Beatrice on Highway 4, the monument is on one of the first quarter sections of land to be claimed under the Homestead Act of 1862. Nearly ten percent of the land in the United States was given to individuals to homestead in the 19th and 20th centuries.
A visitor center near the monument entrance contains displays and videotape programs. A 2.5 mile, self-guided trail traverses a restored tall grass prairie. Hiking and cross-country skiing are permitted.
