Humphrey is located in Platte County north of Columbus, between Albion and Leigh at the junction of US Hwy 81 and Hwy 91.The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 739, a decrease of 2 since 1990. In 1868 early settlers, most of whom were Catholic immigrants from Germany, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Poland, and Ireland, took up claims in Tracy Valley. A post office was established on the L.D. Leach farm three miles north of the present town site. His wife, Nancy, the first postmaster, named the office after the town from which she came, Humphrey, New York. Humphrey was incorporated in 1883. Today, Humphrey businesses include a motel, eating establishments, implement dealers, building contractors, lumberyards, hardware stores, gas stations, grocery store, Quick Shop, local printing, publishing and office supply store, home furnishing stores, funeral home, auto repair and supply shop, trucking firms, and of course, a hog buying station.
