Kearney

Kearney is located in Buffalo County (of which it is the county seat) 45 miles southwest of Grand Island between Odessa and Gibbon along US Hwy 30 near Fort Kearney State Recreation Area and Cottonmill Park. Kearney is located exactly between Boston, MA and San Francisco, CA.

Home of University of Nebraska at Kearney.

In 1848, a fort was established to provide protection for travelers. Named for Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny, Fort Kearny afforded a safe haven for pioneers, pony express riders, prospectors and others as they followed the great Platte river road.

Nature enthusiasts from around the world enjoy the annual sandhill crane migration that takes place each spring. It is a spectacle to behold as nearly 500,000 cranes gather along the Platte River for rest and rejuvenation.

The City of Kearney Parks and Recreation Department maintains 13 parks in Kearney which cover 357 acres, which offer a multitude of land and water activities.
