O'Neill is located in
Holt County (and is the county seat), east of
Atkinson, between Emmet and Inman along the Elkhorn River and US Hwy 20.
The City of O'Neill was founded by John O'Neill in 1880. In 1881, the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad came to O'Neill.
Today, O'Neill's economic activities include ranching, cattle and hog feeding, farming, livestock marketing, government, tourism, and retail and wholesale sales.
While being the Irish Capital of Nebraska, the community of O'Neill goes out of their way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
