Stuart is located in Holt County between Bassett and Atkinson along US Hwy 20 and the Elkhorn River.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 623, a decrease of 27 since 1990.

The first settlers to this area came in the latter part of the 1870s. The town was named for a Scottish sea captain, Peter Stuart, who was the town's first postmaster in 1879.
