Sutherland is located in Lincoln County, west of North Platte along the Platte River and US Hwy 30, between Hershey and Paxton.

The Sutherland area offers over 40 civic groups dedicated to improving our small town life. These include 4-H groups, extension clubs, church auxiliaries, Boy and Girl Scouts, Legion and Lions Clubs and school organizations. The Sutherland Railroad Park is also a popular recreation area, located on land donated to the city by Union Pacific Railroad from its right-of-way. The Lions Club Clubhouse and Trap Range is located east of town. The Sutherland Reservoir offers, swimming, camping, picnicking, skiing, large and small game hunting, boating, golfing, wildlife observation and fishing, including a handicapped fishing area near the canal inlet.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,049, an increase of 17 since 1990.

This community was founded in 1885 and incorporated in April 1905.
