Tekamah is located in Burt County (of which it is the county seat), situated at the Hwy 32 & US Hwy 75 junction, north of Blair, near the Missouri River and the South Dakota boarder.The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,930, an increase of 78 since 1990. A claim was staked to establish Tekamah as a town in October 1854. On March 14, 1855, Tekamah became an incorporated city by an act of the first territorial legislature of Nebraska. An Indian translation defines Tekamah as meaning "big cottonwoods". Tekamah has an excellent park system comprised of six distinct parks: Memorial Park, Athletic Park, Folsom Park, Fireman's Park, South Park and Mini-Park. The parks and recreational areas offer a wide-range of passive and active recreational activities. Dedicated park maintenance has earned Tekamah the coveted TREE CITY award. Summit Lake State Recreation area west of town provides fishing, camping, swimming, picnic shelters and playground areas.
