Andover New Hampshire |
Andover is located in Merrimack County. Alpine and cross country skiing available at Blackwater Ski Area. Visit nearby Elbow Pond, Highland Lake or the historic Cilleyville Bog Bridge.
The history of Andover from 1848-1977 was prominently shaped by the northern line of the Boston & Maine Railroad, which ran the width of town, past depots named Halcyon (East Andover), Andover and Potter Place. The village of Potter Place had been named for Andover’s most famous resident, Richard Potter, America's first successful stage magician, ventriloquist, and hypnotist. In 1813 Potter, a successful performer, bought the 175-acre farm. Potter died in 1853 and his wife Sally died a year later. Both were buried in the front yard of their estate, but the bodies were later moved by the town to their current location to make room for a railroad.
