The history of Andover from 1848-1977 was prominently shaped by the northern line of the Boston & Maine Railroad, which ran the width of town, past depots named Halcyon ([eastando]), Andover and Potter Place. The village of Potter Place had been named for Andover’s most famous resident, Richard Potter, America's first successful stage magician, ventriloquist, and hypnotist. In 1813 Potter, a successful performer, bought the 175-acre farm. Potter died in 1853 and his wife Sally died a year later. Both were buried in the front yard of their estate, but the bodies were later moved by the town to their current location to make room for a railroad. CODE left
