Atkinson is located in Rockingham County in the southeastern part of the state on Highway 121 near the New Hampshire and Massachusetts state line. Atkinson is part of the Lawrence Massachusetts-New Hampshire metro area.
Named after Col. Theodore Atkinson, whose farm once covered all of the area set aside from Plaistow that became the town in 1767. He was a brother-in-law to Governor Benning Wentworth, and served as secretary of the colony until the Revolution.
