Carleton Bridge

Search Swanzey New Hampshire

The Carleton Bridge is located east of N.H. Route 32 on Carleton Road, one-half mile south of Swanzey Village spanning the South Branch Ashuelot River in Swanzey, in Cheshire County.

Town records indicate the original bridge was built in 1789, however, the exact date has not been verified. The current bridge, built in 1869, was constructed by local barn builders as evidenced by the truss construction similar to that used for barns. The bridge was closed in June 1974 but re-opened on Flag Day, June 14, 1975, as a part of the Swanzey Bicentennial Commission program. The Carleton Bridge had been painted by local residents. The bridge is now in need of major repairs at an estimated cost of $487,000 to build a new covered bridge in its place.

The Carleton Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
