Established in 1763, Cornish was once called Mast Camp because it was the shipping point for all the tall ship masts floated down the Conner River by the English. Cornish, located in Sullivan County east of Windsor, was incorporated in 1765 and named after Sir Samuel Cornish, a distinguished English admiral of the Royal Navy.
