Derry is located in Rockingham County 4 miles southeast of Manchester along Interstate 93 near the Robert Frost Farm. Although first settled in 1719, Derry was not incorporated until 1827. Originally part of Londonderry, it included Windham, and portions of Manchester, Salem and Hudson. The town was named from the original Derry, Ireland, a Gaelic word Doire meaning oak woods. Derry is the boyhood home of Commander Alan B. Shepard.
The area along West Running Brook north of Island Pond Road is thought to be the original location of the first Scotch-Irish settlement in Derry, originally called “Nutfield”. The Grinnell Trail, which is open to the public, runs south of Island Pond Road and connects to the Robert Frost Farm nature trail.
